Can we Live Better in Her Death?
EVERY happening leaves a message but this one has literally shaken the nation. For the first time the country has expressed, and expressed decisively, on gender issues. The youth, mostly with dreams about future has shown how much it is concerned about society. It was generally believed that gen-y is self centered, concerned about itself, its career and future, selfish enough to bargain and gain from the Noe-liberal policies of the government etc. But the kind of sensitivity it has shown about the issue is unparalleled in the history of India. It is demanding instant justice in gender related crimes. We should analyse what can be done.
EVERY social issue begins at home. Social scientists advocate change in mind-set that can begin in the family. Gender disparity begins in the family as the daughters are told to be submissive, not outgoing and pay respect to the brothers even younger to them. Even when a gender related crime takes place, the female child prefers to suffer in silence than to make an issue of it, as the male members start finding faults with her only. Her friends feel equally helpless. The same relates to women in jobs or students in higher education.
SECOND is the administration, including police. Police, as we all know, is the most corrupt service particularly in North India. Besides, it is under the control of civil administration and is strongly influenced by mafia and other anti-social elements. Besides, it is under pressure to keep crime rate within limits and under check. The police, even lady police, is not sensitive to crime against women and tries to diffuse the cases in stead of seriously pursuing them. Either FIR is not registered or is registered as a mere formality so that criminals go scot free - again under the influence of politicians or to make quick money.
CAN our judiciary come to rescue? Really not because of weak cases forwarded by the police. Besides, judiciary, particularly at lower levels has not been known to be honest. So the buck stops with politicians, particularly those running the country. As you are aware, more than 150 of our beloved parliamentarians are facing criminal charges. Will they come forward or the political parties of which they are members?
THE present political class believes in diffusing the issue or delaying it as far as possible. This happened with the movements against corruption and against black money. Gen-Y has become wise enough. That is why it demanded time frame before withdrawing the agitation. No one, even the Queen was ready to commit, hence the anger continuing.
I AM, however, now optimistic about the future of our democracy as the youth, if it takes up every issue like this one, can make the country a real super power, sooner than later..
