A Country Raped

I WROTE the above poem almost four decades ago but recollected immediately after national outrage on the issue. I just do not understand what kind of country we are. After every crime we receive standard replies from our administration or junior ministers (as senior ones consider it their insult to talk to the public) The instant reactions of Delhi government and Delhi Police were shocking. It was only after the public outrage the government swung into action. Even when the parliament was in session, till the day before, nothing concrete was even suggested by our law makers, forget about the action.

RAPE and murder are not uncommon in our country but the issue got highlighted simply because it happened in the national capital. We can't expect much from the police force as a policeman gets entry only after bribing the higher ups. The police is doing more important job of providing security to our VIPs, many of whom have criminal background. Our security forces are meant to be killed by terrorists or Maoists. Our bureaucracy is too busy looking after the interests of our politicians. So?

THE pitch of the corus is becoming louder and louder. Our government and police have committed strict action against the culprits but nobody is ready to listen (so much of the trust people's representatives command of the people). Public wants immediate action, they are being promised severe action. People are demanding justice, they are being taught about law. People want capital punishment while there is no such punishment for the act.

I FEEL, the government, if it wanted, could promulgate an ordinance for swift justice. But why should it. It has already given MNREGA, now it is ready with Food Security Bill. They will get their life, then why are they demanding life with dignity? It is unconstitutional - Is it?
