The Farce of Democracy : UP Elections

THE GenX is witness to democratic process as never before in recent years. Though democracy is being welcomed in the new nation-states fighting for it, they too, sooner than latter, will be witness to all this drama.

THE open fight for minority votes, disregarding majority sentiments, fresh doles in terms of job reservation, unemployment fund, electronic gadgets, free electricity and water etc etc have been the major promises not to be kept. But the issues involving Congress and the EC have made the elections and democracy the laughing stock of Indian democracy for the world that seeks inspirational lessons in democracy from us.

RIGHT from the day one, when EC announced the schedule for UP elections (to be held in seven phases) I was convinced that EC is deliberately playing in the hands of Congress. What was the need for such a prolonged phase? Simply, Congress does not have a leader of stature from UP who could bear the burden on his/her shoulders. The fight has to be carried by the Gandhi family as the organizational set up of Congress under Rita Bahuguna is in shambles.  UP is too important for Congress not only for the sake of UP but also for upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, followed by the elections for the President and finally General Elections.

THE episode EC Vs the Law Minister has further reinforced my view. Mr. Khurshid, despite warning from the CEC, kept on harping on the issue of reservation of 8.5% for the muslims. CEC is a constitutional authority and must have taken action against the Congress that could be anything from cancelling/postponing the elections in the constituency where he made the promise to cancelling the election symbol of Congress. Instead Mr. Qureshi, the CEC chose to complain to the President, who following the tradition, sent the matter to the PM, i.e. to the person heading the government of which Mr. Khurshid is a member. What a great act on the part of CEC! I am not writing about the acts involving Rahul, the son of Ms. Sonia as also her great son-in-law Robert Vadra.

THE writing is on the wall.  The Congress, to hide its crimes, will become more and more aggressive in recent future, even at the cost of some of its allies. Let us wait.
