Wither Democracy ?
ON June 5, three and a half decades ago. JP had launched Sampoorna Kranti against the hotheadedness of the rule of Mrs Gandhi. On this day, early morning the police unleashed terror on unsuspecting sleeping satyagrahis in Ramlila Maidan. The Prime Minister, after the meeting by top brass of Congress held to counter the criticism from various walks of life, said, It was unfortunate but inevitable. The court has taken a sou motto stand on the issue but simple logic is : Is Manmohan Singh using his brain properly or it is mere a turban stand?
THE arrogance of Congress is further seen in the statements of other Congress leaders including Sibal and Diggi who are born arrogant. Sibal went further to chide the members of civil society. Now it is becoming clear that there will not be any consensus on Lok Pal bill. The government representatives will not allow PM, higher judiciary and lower bureaucracy to come under the Lok Pal. However, they may show some magnanimity later on by agreeing to include lower bureaucracy too. Ultimately, they will insist that both the contradictory view points be carried and let the Drafting Committee decide. The drafting Committee, set up by the government will obviously toe the Party line.
I have no love for Baba Ram Dev and I don't know much about Anna. But the issues they have raised can't be ignored. The government may snub these torch bearers of the society, but the issues of black money and corruption now can not be slipped under the carpet. Sooner than later the government will have to answer to the people and the coming time shall be really harsh for the government. Why?
BECAUSE an international magazine, in 1991 carried an article mentioning that late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi had stashed 2 billion USD in Swiss Bank. It has never been denied by Gandhi family, nor any action taken on the magazine. Besides, the party that has ruled the country for many more years than any other party is likely to have many more people suspicious of having black money. So, why should the government lead by the Congress commit suicide by agreeing to the black money issue?
