WikiBomb : UPA Hurt
THE expose by The Hindu this week has once again put N. Ram on the front of investigative journalism. Old timers know the way he pursued Bofors case and exposed the truth. A couple of days ago, The Hindu exposed the involvement of US interests in 2006 reshuffle of UPA government in which Mani Shankar was replaced by Murli Deora. But today's Leaks have really exposed the true face of Indian democracy.
IN July 2008 Confidence Vote, the UPA government won by a thin margin. It was alleged that horse trading had taken place to woo parliamentarians. Some BJP whistle blowers showed the bundles of currency used by the Congress to purchase them. Subsequently, a parliamentary committee headed by Mr. K. C. Deo was formed and it did not find conclusive evidence but recommended further probe by a competent agency into the matter. The then Speaker Mr. Som Nath Chaterjee directed the Home Minister to do the needful. Nothing was initiated and the matter subsided.
THE expose today shows that the US was really concerned about the Confidence Vote. The cables sent by its official Mr. Steve from US embassy in New Delhi contain enough information to tarnish the image of this government. But the defence, put forth by Pranabda in the Parliament is really interesting. According to him, (1) The cable sent by an embassy enjoy diplomatic immunity and hence can't be commented upon regarding their authenticity. (2) The matter relates to 14th Lok Sabha while the present government is answerable to the present 15th Lok Sabha. The issues of 14th Lok Sabha can not be put to discussion in the present Lok Sabha. The stand taken by Congress spokespersons in various TV debates today Mr. Abhishek Manu Singhavi and Mr. Manish Tiwari questioned the credibility of the Leaks.
THE opposition has sought the resignation of the Cabinet while the PM, as usual, is silent. The Gandhi family is not a very interactive family and speaks only when it has to take credit for something and not when discredit.
The question is of public perception. With so many scams around, common man may feel like believing the Leaks. Everybody knows that politics today in general is corrupt. The finger has been raised. The truth must be revealed. The government can do the least to enquire into the issue before it engulfs UPA's chances in the ensuing Assembly elections.
