Foreign Policy under SM Krishna

I HAVE never been a fan of India's foreign policy from the days of Pt. Nehru. I believe that India has only one policy in all spheres (including foreign affairs) and that is 'take it easy' policy. There are many duds in Manmohan Singh's cabinet and SM Krishna seems to be one of them.

THE Minister has a consistent reply to all the issues put to him, 'We are talking'. When Indian students in Australia were suffering from racist attacks, he had warned the media that raising the issue in public may jeopardize relations with Australia. When Indian students have been harassed and detained illegally in the TV University fraud in the US, he took up the matter only when it was highlighted by the media. Till date many students are suffering and there is no solution to the issue. The expressions on his face, while talking about the incident were such as if he is helpless and subordinate to the US. (Do you remember the photograph of Manmohan Singh standing along with Obama when he visited India recently? Obama is standing on the right side of the PM with his left hand put on the shoulder of Mr. Singh. Can any Indian leader pose in the same manner with his/her US counterpart?)

NOW when Somalian pirates have kidnapped eight Indians who have been in their captivity for the last seven months, Indian politicians are exposed once again. As most of the victims belong to Rohtak in Haryana, the victims' families met their MP, who happens to be the son of the chief minister. Shockingly, they got a curt reply : I am not the PM of the country. What can I do? Leaders started moving only when the media highlighted the story on March 1. All Congress leaders, including Foreign Minister, speaking on the news channels now claim that negotiations are on to get the release of victims. But what were they doing all these months? Had there been a ward of a politician or of an industrialist among the victims, would they still be sitting idle? They have no answer.

This apathy can not be tolerated for ever. The so called leaders of the masses must realise that there is a limit to everything. Aam aadmi is about to reach that threshold. Either the leaders should mend their ways or quit. Let the better quality leaders take over.
