Corruption & Government
THE caption could well be corruption in government or even corrupt government. The news conference of Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, the FM, deliberately convened by the Congress to allay the doubts of common man about the laxity of the government in tackling corruption did nothing to absolve the government.
THE minister said nothing about 2G (interestingly, there was a cartoon perhaps in The Statesman about a month ago. For the PM 2G means Soniaji and Rahulji), Bofors, CWG, Adarsh Housing etc. When asked about Hasan Ali, who as per government admission owes income tax of more than Rs. 50,000/- crore, the FM shamelessly told the media that his accounts in Swiss banks are virtually empty.
When the complaint was registered against Hasan Ali in 2007, exactly four years ago, his Swiss accounts had more than 8 billion USD. He was arrested but subsequently got bail as the matter was not pursued vigorously by the authorities. The FM told the media that investigations in the matter were on.
FM's statement makes it clear that the government is not serious about corruption. Three officials of CWG, arrested for corruption in games, got bail as the charges were not filed by the CBI against them within the stipulated 60 days. Besides, the cases were filed on the complaints already investigated and reported by the media.
THE statement of Kapil Sibal defending A. Raja, the affidavits of the government in the Supreme Court defending the CVC as also A. Raja, not agreeing to a JPC for 2G probe and thus not letting the Parliament to function (proper functioning of Parliament is the duty of the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs) all point to one thing -- the government is least interested in taking actions against corruption.
BACK to Hasan Ali episode, is it impossible to force him to reveal details of his money laundering? Put him in the custody of Delhi Police and he will speak out the whole truth within 24 hours.
THE question is, how the government that cares for the aam aadmi be so insensitive? It seems to be the fault of the civil society who can't compel the government to be honest. The mafia--political, official, police, corporate business, gunda etc--is so powerful and the system so weak that only aam aadmi can expose them. Let him realise.
