UPA II, Year I, No hits All Miss
On completion of one year in its second term UPA cancelled the celebrations because of AI tragedy in Mangalore. Instead, it decided on a press conference by PM, Manmohan Singh. I have never witnessed such a boring and meaningless press conference in many many years before. It is well known that PM is not a good speaker, but an honest man. Yet he hid more than what he spoke. He did speak but said nothing, nothing that was already known in terms of UPA's stand on various issues. Reporters present did not corner the PM and the credit goes to the floor managers of PM.
There are several major areas on which PM could enlighten us but deliberately avoided to speak his mind out, like - reforms in labour, industrial, judicial, administrative, police etc. sectors, cause of delay in decision on Afzal Guru's
petition, controversy regarding the auction of 2G spectrum, loop-holes in the cabinet w.r.t. collective responsibility, solution to Maoists problems, eradication of corruption, price rise and inflation etc.
Many of the replies went begging. For example : inflation will come down by December. In their Election Manifesto, UPA had promised to reign in prices in 100 days of coming to power. In ,of the 25 '100-day resolutions' only four (16%)have been fulfilled. That is why PM refused to give score to his government's achievements.
There are only two half-achievements of UPA-I. Women's Reservation Bill and RTE. These are not worth mention because nobody knows when the bill will be taken up by Lok Sabha (I have already detailed previously) and second, Mr Sibal has already expressed his inability in implementing RTE.
UPA can ignore people's concerns for the time being as elections are far off. There is plenty of time to address the sufferings of common man by the government of common man.
From the press conference, one thing, that has always been denied by the Congress, became clear. The PM is ready to vacate his post for Rahul Gandhi, the Yuvraj.
