1/3 Cheers for Kapil Sibal

Yesterday's (Feb. 16) decision of Education Minister to bring national level parity in the 10+2 syllabus has been welcomed by the english press without giving a thought, & why should they? as all of them belong to the elite class that will benefit most from this so called reform in education.
The step is like putting the apple before the cart. Is Mr Sibal ignorant about the teaching standards in the countryside, the availability of infrastructure including building and library, the quality of teaching etc?
The reform is bound to create unhealthy competition among unequals. Can a student -of a remote single-teacher school or even from a government school in a town- be expected to compete with someone from the elite Mission or Public or any International school? Besides, if the admission to graduate level has to be through competition, then what is the need for the qualification of 10+2, which will become just a formality?
The same newspapers, who have hailed Mr Sibal's announcement, had recently carried a report captioned Annual Status of Education prepared by Pratham, an NGO reflecting upon the dire status of education in the country. In stead of finding a solution to the ailing education sysyem, the step by Mr. Sibal is likely to agravate the problem. The step needs to be reviewed urgently before it is implemented.
