Justice Rangnath Mishra's report is shocking as well as revealing. A former Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Mr Mishra has recommended 15% reservation for minorities including 10% for the muslims in jobs as well as education. Doesn't Mr. Mishra know that religion based reservation is ultra vires? How can a person of his stature and knowledge recommend so? Even the UPA government seems favourable to the recommendations. Realising that there is a cap on reservation beyond 50%, where from these 15% come? It has also been recommended that this may be drawn from OBC quota. Will the OBCs take it lightly or the country will plunge into the dark days of agitations, dharnas?
Another recommendation of Mr. Mishra is really shocking. He has recommended that the term scheduled caste be made religion-free and be extended to include christians and muslims. It is really shameful that Mr. Mishra even does not know that these are equalitarian religions without any high or low social ranking.
We all know that these so called dalits among muslims and christians are those who converted attracted by the equalitarian philosophy of these religions but conversion has not changed their plight. As religion-based reservation is not possible, the best way would be that votaries of the rights for dalits of other religions should convince these dalits to go back to their parent religion to enjoy the fruits of constitutional safeguards available to scheduled castes.
